Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Guide: Capt. Scott Mac Calla

A 5th generation native Floridian, Capt. Scott MacCalla has been sight fishing the Mosquito Lagoon, Indian River Lagoon, and Atlantic Ocean for 20 plus years and guiding for the past 13 years. Growing up in Titusville, on the shores of the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon, Scott shares a deep understanding of the area and inshore sight fishing. "To me, there is nothing like watching an angler experience sight fishing for the first time. Watching them find their target, making an accurate cast, and finial the excitement that the angler has seeing the fish eat. That's what sight fishing is all about."

Scott's shallow-water travels reach far beyond Mosquito Lagoon, including the out-Islands of the Bahamas for bonefish, Florida’s west coast targeting tarpon, Mexico and the Florida Keys for bonefish, tarpon and permit, the Louisiana marsh for redfish and black drum, and the Florida Everglades for redfish, snook, and tarpon.

The Most Memorable Fish of My Life

His most memorable catch was a 100 pound tarpon in less than a foot of water with his best friend and angling partner Capt. Nick Sassic. Post-hurricane Charlie, Nick and Scott were searching for redfish in New Smyrna Beach in the north Mosquito Lagoon. Scott recalls this as, "An unbelievable eat in super skinny water! Didn’t land the fish, but the eat made it the most memorable fish of my life, so far! It’s not always the fish that you catch that keeps you fishing, the ones that get away are more memorable and make you go back!” Scott loves fishing period! Sight fishing with flies is his favorite. Regardless of the fish, panfish on a 4wt, a silver king on an 11wt, or a giant redfish on a 9wt, Scott loves it all. Fishing is what he does for a living and it's his passion.

At 32 years of age, his guiding skills have been put to the test throughout the prestigious Redbone@Large Celebrity Tournament Series at Mosquito Lagoon. In 2003, Scott guided anglers that captured both the Celebrity Grand Championship and Spin/Plug Division Championship. In 2004, Scott again guided his angler to the Spin/Plug Division Championship, the 2006 Spring – Celebrity Grand Champion Guide, 2007 Fall – Celebrity Grand Champion Guide, 2007 Fall- Guide to largest Redfish. "The Redbone isn't about how well 'Scott Mac Calla' can fish - it's about how well I guide my anglers, and that's the real fun for me." Along with his success in the Redbone Tournaments and many others, Scott was also crowned the State of Florida Casting Champion in 1998 and 2000.

Guiding for Giant Louisiana Redfish

From October through February, Scott also guides out of Louisiana where giant redfish and black drum are object of his angler's desire. Each spring, Scott spends peak tarpon season guiding his anglers in the pursuit of "Silver King" during the annual tarpon migration.
